Technology is widely used in schools and is on the uprise of becoming one of the most popular ways to teach a subject. There are many reasons why a teacher would be influenced to use technology in the classroom. One reason would be to enhance their teaching as well as their classroom management. Teachers also use technology to communicate with families via email or phone. Technology is also used for improving and assessing student learning by testing students with hands-on and involved activities on such technology like a SmartBoard. Students are also more aware of local, state, national and global news through teachers' use of technology in the classroom. Teachers also use technology to go along with certification and professional licensing in their occupation and in order to have a diverse teaching methodology. The 21st century classroom must combine both the 3Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic) with the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity) and innovative teachers who are technology literate can only provide this.
Students also are influenced to use technology in school. Students have different learning styles and incorporating technology might be a good way for some students to learn better. Videos are useful for auditory and visionary learning students whereas an interactive model on a SmartBoard is good for students who learn kinesthetically. Students are influenced to learn with technology for the overall reason that they are living (and may have been born in) the 21st century. Everyone is constantly surrounded by technology everywhere. This is important to teach students how to use technology as a way of learning because it is so easily accessible now. Students have the ability to be more open to learn about diversity and deeper thinking as they are exposed to ideas, societies and other global factors that they may have never seen without technology.
Out of the ITSE standards, for students, I think the most important one is Digital Citizenship. I think this because it talks about using technology properly and in good use. I think it is important for students to be using technology but I also think that it can be easily abused. Without correct guidelines students could misuse technology in the classroom and this could effect others on a personal level as well as a global level if it got to the extreme. But knowing how to demonstrate personal responsibility with technology for lifelong learning is very crucial when teaching students how to use technology because of how fast things can spread virally. One of the ITSE standards that I would consider outside my skill set is one of the standards for teachers and that would be model digital age work and learning. I am not yet skilled in this standard because I am used to using textbooks, books, newspapers, etc. for my learning and I would consider that my learning style. However, I have been exposed to much more technology and I think as I go further in my education and into my occupation I will improve that skill set.

I do agree with the “digital native” for today’s youth
because they have known nothing about a time without no technology. Many 3
year olds either learn on the TV, tablet or their parents’ iPhones in today’s
society. So young children are already exposed to the technology age without
knowing what they are doing exactly. A digital native is referring to people who grew up knowing technology. Mainly children, teenagers and young adults who don't remember not using technology. I have seen differences between me, a digital native, and teachers/professors, digital immigrants. Many teachers have trouble using online websites for classrooms and mix up postings or do not know how to get to a link. Also, with projections on the SmartBoards many teachers are confused when turning it on how to get the screen to show the screen on the SmartBoard. Teachers and professors also do not know how to do basic skills with technology like brighten the screen or turn the sound on. My learning experience hasn't been effected too much because of this but a lot of time is wasted in class when these issues come about which lessens the time I have for learning. I anticipate that when I get to be in my profession as a teacher there will be even more technology usages that I will have to be experienced with but I think it will be common so there won't be as much confusion using technology. I also think that teachers will have to keep much more up to date with new technology advancements and know how to use everything in the classroom whereas teachers now don't necessarily have to know everything because of how new technology is in schools. Hopefully handheld books will still be used though because that is my teaching style preference.
